Small Upgrade, Big Impact: The Story Behind a Film-Cutting Machine Improvement

At Ruisen, innovation is not always about introducing new equipment or adopting the latest technology. Sometimes, it starts with a simple question: Can we make what we already have work better?

Recently, our workshop technicians took on this challenge with an aging film-cutting machine that had been in service for nearly six years.

Over time, the machine had begun to experience unstable cutting speeds, uneven cutting edges, and increasing dimensional deviations. These issues not only affected product quality but also resulted in greater material waste.

Rather than immediately replacing the equipment, the two technicians decided to explore whether the machine could be improved through modification. With the company’s support, they were given two weeks to focus on the project.

From Problem to Practical Solution

The improvement process was far from straightforward. Initial attempts with two different speed-control solutions failed to deliver the stability they needed. One performed well at low speeds but became unstable at higher speeds, while the other responded too slowly.

So they went back to the drawing board.

During the day, they closely monitored the machine in operation. After work, they researched technical solutions and reviewed different approaches. Drawing on years of hands-on experience, they ultimately developed and installed a servo-based speed stabilization system and manually adjusted the balance of the blade-guide rail.

The Results

The modification delivered results beyond expectations:

• Cutting speed stability improved to within ±0.5 m/min
• Qualified cutting accuracy increased from 92% to 99.2%
• Cutting edges became smoother and more consistent
• Material waste was reduced
• The workload for operators was significantly improved
• Overall production flow became more stable and efficient

More importantly, the project demonstrated the value of experience, initiative, and continuous improvement on the shop floor.

The greatest achievement was not simply improving a machine. It was proving that frontline employees, when given the opportunity and support to experiment, can turn practical experience into meaningful innovation.
